Re-Gen & Aesthetics Concierge of TexasAre you exercising but struggling to maintain muscle? Is abdominal fat becoming harder to lose? Maybe your sleep, recovery, energy, or overall vitality no longer feel the way they once did. These changes are often blamed entirely on aging, but declining growth hormone activity may be part of the picture.
Growth hormone is produced by the pituitary gland and released in pulses, particularly during deep sleep. Production peaks during youth and gradually declines throughout adulthood, decreasing by an estimated 14% per decade after age 20. This natural decline is sometimes called the “somatopause.”
Why Growth Hormone Matters
Growth hormone communicates with the liver and other tissues to stimulate insulin-like growth factor 1, or IGF-1. Together, the growth hormone and IGF-1 axis supports:
• Lean muscle development and maintenance
• Fat metabolism and healthier body composition
• Exercise recovery and tissue repair
• Bone strength
• Energy and physical performance
• Sleep quality
• Skin thickness and elasticity
• Overall vitality and quality of lifeLower growth hormone activity is not the only possible explanation for fatigue, weight gain, poor sleep, or muscle loss. Menopause, low testosterone, thyroid dysfunction, insulin resistance, inadequate protein intake, medications, and chronic stress may cause similar concerns.
Looking at the Complete Hormone Picture
Growth hormone is released in pulses, so a single random growth hormone level offers limited useful information. IGF-1 provides a more stable reflection of activity along the growth hormone pathway and can be evaluated alongside thyroid, sex hormones, glucose, insulin, and other metabolic markers.
At Re-Gen, assessment of the growth hormone and IGF-1 axis is included when appropriate as part of our comprehensive lab panel. Laboratory results are interpreted together with symptoms, health history, body composition, sleep, nutrition, and exercise habits.
Supporting Your Body’s Natural Pathways
Direct human growth hormone replacement is medically appropriate for certain diagnosed conditions, but it is not our standard approach to age-related decline. Excessive growth hormone exposure can cause fluid retention, joint discomfort, numbness, insulin resistance, and other complications.
Instead, we typically prescribe peptide therapies designed to stimulate the body’s own hypothalamic-pituitary signaling. Options may include sermorelin, CJC-1295 with ipamorelin, or tesamorelin with ipamorelin. In some treatment plans, IGF-1 LR3 may be cycled separately.
These therapies work differently and are not appropriate for everyone. Many peptide uses in wellness and healthy aging are considered off-label and require individualized prescribing, appropriate screening, and ongoing monitoring.
The goal is not to create unnaturally high hormone levels or promise a return to your twenties. It is to identify what has changed and determine whether supporting your body’s own pathways may help you sleep, recover, and function more optimally as you age.
