Shockwave (Acoustic Wave) is a non-invasive medical treatment that utilizes shock waves to improve the appearance of cellulite. We recommend hour long treatments for most areas with cellulite. Our Platinum membership includes weekly hour long treatments. 

Cellulite refers to alterations in skin texture that lead to an “orange peel” or “mattress-like” appearance. It is more prevalent in women, with studies indicating that 85-98% of women experience some degree of cellulite. 

The distribution of fat differs between men and women. In men, connective tissue fibers supporting fat run parallel to the skin, resulting in minimal pulling of the skin by fat deposits and smoother skin texture. Conversely, in women, fat is organized perpendicular to the skin, leading to a pulling effect by the connective tissue support structure and an uneven skin surface.

Shockwave offers a distinct method for addressing cellulite.

By utilizing pressure waves, shockwave targets the two primary causes of cellulite: fibrous septae and fat protrusion into the lower dermis. These pressure waves generated by acoustic wave therapy penetrate the skin and fat layers, directly affecting the fibrous septae. As a result, the pressure disrupts the collagen within the septae, leading to the release of the skin and ultimately creating a smoother surface.

Shockwave utilizes pressure waves to disrupt collagen responsible for pulling down the skin. This process relaxes the bands pulling the skin and promotes a smoother surface. Additionally, AWT stimulates the formation of new collagen, which aids in reducing fat protrusion beneath the skin.

What is AWT/Shockwave For Cellulite?

Acoustic Wave Treatment (AWT)/Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) uses acoustic (sound) waves to deliver pulses of energy to the area of treatment. First and foremost, shockwave has disrupted medicine as we know it by providing evidence-based, non-invasive treatment options that get to the very root of the problem to fix it rather than simply addressing symptoms.

This technology uses high-energy sound waves to make changes at the cellular level, thus re-educating dysfunctional tissue. In response to AWT/ESWT, biological reactions of liberation of different agents (measured by immunohistochemistry) such as VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), eNOS (endothelial nitric oxide synthase) and PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) ensue (Wang et al 2006).

These cellular changes promote angiogenesis (growth of new blood vessels and improved local blood circulation), collagenesis (growth of new collagen), and elastin genesis (growth of new elastin). Additionally, stem cells and growth factors are stimulated, leading to restoration and rejuvenation of tissue.

Shockwave is ideal for treating multiple conditions safely, including musculoskeletal injuries, cellulite, erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction in women, collagen and elastin loss in facial and neck tissue, and restoring blood flow to the scalp for hair regeneration. This treatment is non-invasive, with no downtime. A series of 6 treatments is recommended for most conditions, and treatments usually take around 30 minutes.

How Cellulite forms:

  • Fat cells grow larger, and they become trapped under the skin, causing the surface of the skin to bulge, leading to dimpled appearance (this can occur even in people of normal weight, d/t genetic predisposition)
  • The connective tissue that connects dermal and fascial layers become stretched and hardened, losing normal flexibility 
  • Blood flow is restricted by unhealthy fat cells

How many treatments are necessary?

A series of 6 treatments spaced either twice per week, or one week apart is necessary

When will I see results:

Full results will be seen 12 weeks after your series is complete, but many patients notice improvement much sooner than this.

Does the treatment hurt?

The treatment feels like a firm tapping on your skin. It is not painful.

How long does the Shockwave procedure take?

The duration of an ESWT session depends on the specific condition being treated. However, most sessions last approximately 15 to 20  minutes.

What can I expect after the procedure?
  • You may get your pain receptors and nerve fibers affected due to the analgesics ESWT has. This can result in pain relief, particularly in conditions associated with chronic pain, such as plantar fasciitis.
  • It’s common to experience mild soreness or discomfort at the treatment site immediately after the procedure. This is usually temporary.
  • In many cases, you can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure. Your healthcare provider will provide guidance on any specific restrictions. 
  • Any initial soreness or discomfort tends to diminish over the next few days.
